Issey Miyake, a renowned Japanese fashion designer, dies at the age of 84 due to liver cancer in a hospital in Tokyo. Where Issey Miyake Was Born?
Miyake was born in Hiroshima on April 22, 1938. At the age of 7, Miyake experienced great tragedy in the form of the U.S. bombing in August 1945. Interestingly, Miyake never expressed his feelings about the incident until 2009, when U.S. President Barack Obama expressed his vision of a nuclear-free world.
Fashion designing was not Miyake’s first choice as a career. He wanted to become a dancer. His interest in fashion design developed by studying his sister’s fashion magazines.

He graduated from Tama Art University in graphic design. He took part in the Bunka Fashion College competition but couldn’t win it due to a lack of sewing skills. Moreover, he enrolled in Chambre syndicate de la couture parisienne school in Paris. Here he worked as an apprentice under Guy Laroche. He also got the chance to work with Hubert de Givenchy.
Issey Miyake’s Pleated Clothing
Miyake started experimenting with pleating to make garments that are flexible as well as easy to maintain. In addition, the manufacturing of pleated clothing involves sewing the garments first, then sewing garments sandwiched between two layers of paper. After sandwiching, cloths are passed through a heat press which makes pleating. The fabric’s paper retains the pleats. Garments are ready to wear just after separating them from the paper cocoons.
Steve Jobs’ Signature Black Turtlenecks by Issey Miyake
Miyake was a friend of Apple’s Steve Jobs. He developed black turtlenecks, which became Jobs’ signature attire. Steve Jobs said in an interview that he asked Miyake to make some of the black turtlenecks that he liked. Thus, he produced 100 turtlenecks at Jobs’ request.
